Housing ManagerAthensMAZÍ HOUSING PROJECT

Mazí Housing Project are looking for an experienced, creative, compassionate and resilient Housing Manager.

  • Hours: Full-time Mon-Fri, some evenings
  • Location: Athens, Greece
  • Start date: May 2024
  • Deadline: 19th April

About Mazí Housing
Mazí Housing supports displaced young men experiencing homelessness in Athens.

Our community-based housing breaks the cycle of homelessness, and creates a safe, stable environment to build from.

Our person-centred casework supports each resident to gather the tools they need (be it legal, health, linguistic, employability) to move on from Mazí into their own accommodation.

All of our activities are driven by the needs and voices of residents. Over the last four years, we have worked with over 100 young displaced men on their own in Greece.

About the role

You are the frontline of Mazí’s support: this is the core of our work.

Your role is to facilitate, encourage, support and enable residents in Mazí’s apartments to live well together; to take responsibility as an adult for engaging well with others; and to co-create what Mazí is. Your role is to create safe, stable places for residents to live in.

A cornerstone of this is the house meeting, every week in each apartment: in this moment you will create space for residents to find ways to communicate better, to air concerns to each other or to you, and to co-create systems for running their apartment.

This is a bespoke role, it is unlikely you will have done anything like it.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Build and maintain trusting and constructive relationships with residents and overall house community
  • Facilitate weekly house meetings where residents organise their week, co-create rules and solve disputes; support residents to communicate
  • Establish yourself as a focal point for questions, conflicts and general support: maintain confidentiality of residents and exercise good judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential information
  • Resolve any conflicts by de-escalating tensions, facilitating communication and enabling cross-cultural understanding
  • Support residents to engage with and become part of the house community
  • Ensure residents maintain the house; coordinate maintenance and repairs with residents, landlords and technicians
  • Distribute cash for food and bills, maintain internal accounts for the apartments
  • Coordinate food and hygiene procurement
  • Attend weekly meetings with the programmes team to discuss progress and needs of residents and of the community

About you

  • You have exceptional communication skills, especially in a multicultural and multilingual environment. Cultural and contextual awareness are fundamental skills in this role.
  • You are a confident leader and are as much at ease running group sessions with adult men as you are listening to someone 1-1.
  • You are a calm, assured presence experienced at de-escalating tension and see conflict as an opportunity for understanding and growth.
  • You are confident to work independently, and you have a self-sufficient work ethic.

Requirements

  • Proficient speaking English and Greek (our common language is English, so you must be comfortable using both English and Greek in your work).
    • At least 3 years experience in a project facing role, preferably managing housing and working with adult men
    • Previous experience working in and knowledge of the Greek context and specifically the needs and challenges faced by displaced people in Greece.
    • Knowledge of at least one other relevant language is an asset: Farsi, Dari, French, Arabic, Somali.
    • You’re comfortable working odd hours (house meetings can finish at 8pm!)

What we offer

  • Salary of up to €1000 net dependent on experience.
    • Opportunity to contribute to a small and evolving organisation: we want you to help shape Mazí’s future.
    • Monthly metro card and staff SIM card.

To apply

Please send:

  • Your CV, and
  • cover letter in English with the subject Housing Manager Role, outlining your experience, suitability and motivation for the role to [email protected]

Interviews will be held on a rolling basis, and a candidate will be selected when we find the right person.
