Generation 2.0 RED and HIAS Greece – Joint Report to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

One way to strengthen our efforts in advocating for the rights of migrant communities in Greece is by participating in the United Nations’ efforts to ensure that the country protects the human rights of all individuals, regardless of gender, religion, national origin, and other factors.

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is one such mechanism that examines human rights violations based on race, color, national or ethnic origin. The Committee is set to meet from November 25 to December 13, 2024, to review Greece’s progress in addressing racial discrimination.

Generation 2.0 RED, together with HIAS Greece, has submitted a Joint Report to the Committee, highlighting:

a) The unequal treatment of retirees who have made equal contributions to the social security system, as elderly citizens from third countries must prove, in addition to their years of insurance, the additional condition of 40 or 30 years of legal residence.

b) The significant challenges faced by beneficiaries of international protection in obtaining a Social Security Number (AMKA), which is necessary for access to healthcare, social services, and employment services.

We are awaiting the Committee’s response, with the issuance of relevant recommendations that Greece will be called to implement, in order to strengthen our advocacy on these issues!
