About us
Khora Asylum Support Team (KAST) is part of the Khora Community Centre, which is based in Athens and supports refugees, asylum-seekers, and undocumented migrants. KAST run an asylum support drop-in clinic in central Athens but we now mostly work by appointment because of the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. We aim to provide free and accurate information and practical support to all asylum seekers, refugees, and undocumented migrants without discrimination. In order to do our work we need interpreters, because most of our visitors are unable to communicate precise information in English.
About the role
Interpreters will work 6 hours per week. The contract will last 3 months (with the possibility for this to be extended). This will include an initial one-month trial period. Working hours will be scheduled in advance and must be kept to. These hours will cover different tasks:
- Mainly interpret for visitors and KAST caseworkers during private “casework assessments” at our offices.
- Help design and carry out outreach work among communities that do not have good access to services and information, including information about KAST and other services in Athens. The aim will be to build trust in these communities so we can work together and assist people in the future.
- Visit hospitals and other services around Athens with a KAST caseworker, but very rarely.
About you
- We are seeking to hire people with refugee backgrounds as we recognise that refugees themselves have the best understanding of the asylum system in Athens.
- According to Greek law, you need to have been legally registered as an asylum seeker for at least six months in order to work in Greece.
- We are only allowed to employ people who are legally permitted to work in Greece, and all interpreters must have an AFM, AMKA or PAAYPA and a Greek bank account.
- You must speak English to an advanced level (B2 +).
- You must be a native / fluent Farsi speaker. However, if you speak multiple other languages (including Greek) your application will be prioritised.
- You must be able to commit to a minimum period of 3 months.
- You must be committed to supporting people in precarious situations.
- A basic understanding of the legal framework for asylum and its terminology is beneficial but not necessary.
- You must have an understanding of and commitment to principles of confidentiality and data protection.
- You must be willing to translate sensitive and taboo topics accurately and respectfully.
- You must be accepting of cultural differences and have the ability to work effectively with a
- diverse team.
- You must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Required: Research Assistants for a Study on Migrant South Asian Male Workers
Project: A research project on migrant agricultural workers from Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan is examining the reasons for these men’s migration to Greece, how they work and live in rural Greek communities, and their masculinity. One part of the study focusses on the migrant men’s sexuality and masculine desire.
This study is being conducted by Dr. Reena Kukreja who works in the Global Development Studies Department, Queen’s University, Canada. (https://www.queensu.ca/devs/reena-kukreja
Requirements: Bangladeshi / Pakistani man, preferably in the same age range as the men (mid to late 20s) to conduct structured interviews with male migrant workers. Verbal and written fluency in Bangla /Urdu and Punjabi, and English are key to hiring. Training on conducting one-on-one interviews will be provided remotely (online) by Dr. Reena Kukreja to select interview facilitators / interpreters.
Job detail: Establish contact with migrant men in specified location and conduct face-to-face and one-on-one interviews with small groups of migrant workers from a specified nationality. The interviews will be on men’s sexuality, desire, and aspirations for love. The Research Assistant will record the interviews and transcribe them in each of the language. This RAship will take place Dec 2020 and Jan – Feb 2021.
Remuneration: Euro 80 per day + modest per diem and transport cost (via bus) to and from field location to Athens.
