If you have any questions, please email directly to [email protected]

Action for Education is an independent, grassroots organization founded in the UK and Greece in 2017. We develop and support projects that aim to remove the barriers to education for displaced communities. Since February 2020, we’ve been working on opening a new centre dedicated to expanding our capacity to work with youth on the island. It is an emergency response to the desperate conditions experienced by refugees on Chios – a critical bottleneck on the road of flight to Europe. This centre will be our third space, complementing our existing Learning Centre and Youth Centre. The new project will be co-implemented with “Be aware and share” (BAAS) a swiss organisation. The coordination team of the new project therefore will consist of 3 Coordinators (2 from AFE and 1 from BAAS).

AFE and BAAS pursue two main goals with this project: first, we offer an essential safe space to youth with a focus on meeting the needs of the most vulnerable populations – including unaccompanied minors and young women. Careful guidance in learning, recreation and communal activities build resilience and develop peace-building mechanisms, an opportunity they are ill-afforded in the harsh, tense and frequently violent conditions in the camps. We support our participants also by offering access to basic services, such as hygiene facilities, supplementary nutrition and referrals to specialised assistance. Second, we help students develop and maintain language and concentration as well as practical and cognitive skills through curricula of English, languages and projects, which also stimulate imagination and let students and participants explore their own interests, old and new.

Responsibilities :

  • Manage a team of 12 volunteers or more, ensuring the programme objectives are met as set out by AFE and BAAS.

  • Onboard new volunteers into their role as teachers/youth workers, organise professional training and teaching resources for all volunteers.

  • Organise and select appropriate learning materials and resources (e.g. context/gender sensitivity)

  • Take lead in supporting volunteers to plan, prepare, and teach language lessons and create a positive learning environment.

  • Lead on the development and implementation of new ideas for the centre including ways it can be used when teaching is not taking place e.g. community events and integration activities

  • Support with the recruitment and interview process of potential volunteers for the project.

  • Assist in delivering Child Protection training and Relationship Boundary training for every new volunteer.

  • Facilitate and attend weekly coordination meetings with other coordinators

  • Financial management, making sure that activities and costs are documented and justified for present and future accountability

  • Support in Student Registration procedures on a weekly basis

  • Animate fundraising activities, campaigns and working groups with on-site and previous volunteers

  • Be part of a country-wide coordination team and in touch with coordinators across Greece. You will be involved in decision-making processes and the overall organisation’s efficiency, continuous improvement and operations.

  • Contributing qualities of patience, flexibility and discernment to establish a sustainable and effective youth programme

  • Background in youth work or education, especially with displaced populations in emergency contexts
